Congratulations Matt Novack

Congratulations Matt Novack, winner of a Chicago Tribune All-State Academic Team scholarship for 2009.  Panels of educators and citizens involved in educational issues served as judges for the more than 250 entries received.

Matt has also been named as a Semi-Finalist in the 2009 Presidential Scholars Program.  The Commission on Presidential Scholars will soon complete its selection of the high school seniors who will be named as the 2009 Presidential Scholars.  The Commission's choices will be announced in mid-May by U.S. Secretary of Education, Arne Duncan.  Matt is among approximately 560 semi-finalist who have been selected from a pool of over 3,000 candidates.  Good luck Matt.

ST. FRANCIS TAKES PART IN NATIONAL ALCOHOL and DRUG RECOVERY MONTH

As part of the National Alcohol and Drug Recovery Month, which aims to motivate individuals who need help to get treatment and to raise public awareness about alcoholism and drug addiction, the Guidance and Counseling Department will offer confidential alcohol and drug screenings and informational meetings throughout the month of April. If you are interested in finding out more information, please contact Mrs. Rupp at ext. 104 or Ms. Sullivan at ext.108.

Since early detection of alcoholism and drug addiction can increase the likelihood of successful recovery, knowing the warning signs is important:
  • Blackouts. Periods of time after drinking that cannot be remembered.
  • Tolerance. Requiring increasingly larger amounts of alcohol to experience the same effect.
  • Physical withdrawal symptoms. These may include nausea as well as shaking, sweating, confusion and hallucinations ( delirium tremens) while not drinking. Delirium tremens (also known as "the DTs") is the most serious symptom of acute alcohol withdrawal.
  • Legal, relationship, financial problems.
  • Anhedonia. Loss of interest in once pleasurable activities.
  • Unusual drinking habits. These may include drinking alone or in secret, gulping drinks or making a ritual of having drinks before, during and after dinner.

What's Your Parenting Style?
Take This Quiz and Find Out!

No one has all the answers when it comes to raising teenagers that avoid risky behavior and develop healthy coping mechanisms. However, current research strongly suggests that a certain parenting style can make a difference when raising teens that are prepared to succeed in life. Drinking behaviors are learned and parents who are involved and supportive are more likely to raise student s that avoid drinking and are less likely to become dependent on alcohol.

Ask yourself the following questions to find your parenting style and learn more about what you're doing right, and what you could do better.
Summer Book Tests

The summer book tests will be offered again this summer as a courtesy to students who do not wish to take all three tests at the beginning of the school year. The first test date will be Wednesday, July 1. The second test date will be Tuesday, July 21. On both dates, tests will be offered at 12:00 and 7:00. All students should report to the cafeteria. A letter detailing which tests are available on which dates will be mailed home with the fourth quarter progress reports. Incoming freshman will receive details with their course requests in May.
