Notes From the Wellness Center Swine
Flu Alert and
Resources
Because of the
heightened awareness of swine flu cases reported
in the United States and Mexico, we wanted to
inform and assure you that SFHS has a plan in
place that coincides with recommendations from the
CDC and local health departments to address such
outbreaks.
We will continue to monitor news
of the outbreak and be in contact with state and
local health departments. SFHS will also
continue to use procedures that are followed each
flu season, including participating in flu
monitoring, tracking attendance and illness,
reviewing hand washing/cough/cold care, and
building cleaning.

Notes From the Wellness

Tips for
Prom:
Like going to prom, learning to drive is one
of life's milestones. PARENTS, you can serve an
important role by encouraging your teen to drive
safely to and from prom. Motor vehicle accidents
are the leading cause of death in teenagers and
one in four of those deaths involved a teen who
had been drinking. Depending on your student's age
there are graduated drivers licensing (GDL) laws
in Illinois, insist that they abide by them.
(Click here to see the (GDL). http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/publications/rules
_of_the_road/rr_chap03.html#initial Under
the Illinois "Use It & Lose It " zero
tolerance law, those under 21 who are caught with
ANY trace of alcohol in their blood will lose
their license. They can also be charged with a
DUI. Teens often do not consider the serious
consequences of drinking and driving, this is why
we as parents need to remind them. Click here to
read about the "Use it and Lose It" penalties,
fines, loss of driving privileges and possible
jail time. http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/publications/pdf_
publications/dsd_a10410.pdf We
all want our students to be safe on prom night,
but you are the ones who can make an impact.
Please talk with your student about alcohol facts,
reasons not to drink and ways to avoid drinking in
difficult situations. Please help enforce the laws
on underage drinking and driving, establish your
own rules and enforce them with consistent and
appropriate
consequences. |
Poetry Slam
On Thursday, April 23rd, Mr. Jim Wall and the
St. Francis Library sponsored a "poetry slam" for
students. This event was hosted by renowned
Poetry Slam Artist George Miller, a professor of
English at Lewis University in Romeoville. Mr.
Miller performed some of his poetry and invited
students to share their own efforts.
Traditionally, a poetry slam is an event at which
poets read or recite original work and are then
judged by members of the audience. Students from
Creative Writing and several English classes
attended and experienced the fun of sharing and
creating
poetry. |

Alert: Parent/Guardian Transportation
Reimbursement
Funding
Please join the Catholic Conference of
Illinois (CCI) in asking the Illinois General
Assembly to fund the Parent/Guardian
Transportation Reimbursement program next
year. The Illinois State Board of Education
(ISBE) has proposed cutting funding for this
program to zero. As the program provides
needed financial reimbursements to families denied
bus service for their children, we must act to
preserve it. Use the link below for a letter
that can be sent to your state Representative and
state Senator.
To find out who your
state Representative and Senator are, please visit
www.ilga.gov and click on
Legislator Lookup in the lower right portion
of the page or call our offices at
217-528-9200 or 312-368-1066. Thank you for
your help.
