Quote for the week: "I can no
other answer make, but thanks and
thanks." William
Shakespeare Thank
you to everyone who made Taking Chances
for St. Francisa very special event. A huge
"Spartan" thank you to Rita & Pat Lusk for
co-chairing this event and to Sue & Henry
Ferraro for their continued
support. Some of us think we're
observing George Washington's Birthday
(perpetually moved to more convenient Monday dates
since 1971), some of us think we're celebrating
the combined birthdays of George Washington and
Abraham Lincoln (two formerly separate holidays
smushed into one), and some of us think we're
honoring the memory of all U.S. Presidents, past
and present. Which is it? However you choose to
recognize this holiday is fine-I hope it is safe
and enjoyable. Raeann Huhn -

Notes from the
Wellness Center
Why are immunizations important? They
are valuable because they keep our student, staff
and the public healthy. Vaccines prevent the
morbidity that could occur as a result of disease
and they also prevent the spread of disease to
those who are most vulnerable such as infants, the
elderly and those whose immune system are
suppressed.
It is also important to
understand the concept of "herd" immunity.
As more of the "herd" is protected, fewer are at
risk of getting the disease and spreading it to
others. The cost to treat the disease is
considerably far more than the cost of the
vaccines. We also need to keep in mind that
just because we in the United States are
protected, our global neighbors are not and
diseases can easily reemerge. Diseases may
be brought into the US by American's traveling
abroad or from people visiting areas with current
outbreaks. It is important to remember that the
anti-vaccine media, among other things, downplays
or ignores the danger of vaccine-preventable
diseases and the prevalence of these diseases
abroad.

Thank you to all who
supported Taking Chances For St.
Francis
Taking Chances for St. Francis
was a great success! The stars of the
event were the St. Francis Jazz Ensemble and
director Mr. Bob Mamminga. Their music was
outstanding! Thank you to everyone
involved who contributed to such a great evening
of fun! Taking Chances was more than
a fundraiser! It was an opportunity for
supporters of Catholic education to join together
in the spirit of building a better community for
the students of St. Francis! With your
help, we did just that. Thank you to all
the donors, the local businesses and the many
volunteers who have contributed selflessly
to achieve such a worthy goal.
