Quote of the Week: "What lies behind us
and what lies before us are tiny matters compared
to what lies within us." ~ Ralph
Waldo Emerson

Student / Faculty Basketball
Game
Thursday, March 18, St.
Francis High School is hosting a very special
event! At 7:30pm, a Student/Faculty basketball
game will be held in the Spyglass gym. This
is a perfect opportunity to have a great time,
catch up with friends, and see teachers and
students interacting in a fun-filled game.
Also, some of St. Francis's favorite teachers will
be performing a dance at halftime! Please let
everyone know what a great event this is, and
don't forget, all proceeds go towards lowering the
cost of Prom, which will be held at the Shedd
Aquarium this year! The cost of admission is
$3.00, and anyone and everyone is welcome. See you
there! |
Support House Bill 6096 and Senate Bill
3530 To Restore Textbook Loan
Funding To
augment our on-going efforts, we have asked
Representative Chapa LaVia (D-Aurora) and Senator
Ira Silverstein (D-Chicago) to introduce
legislation in the House and Senate to
restore funding to the Textbook Loan Program at
Fiscal Year 2007 levels: the bills are House
Bill 6096 and Senate Bill 3530. Our goal is
to sign up as many co-sponsors as possible.
Last week, we added 14 co-sponsors in the
House and 8 in the
Senate. Now we need your help:
please call your State Representative and ask him
or her to sign on as a co-sponsor to House Bill
6096 and call your State Senator and ask him or
her to sign on as a co-sponsor to Senate Bill
3530. The Textbook Loan Program has
been in operation since 1975. Its purpose is
to provide secular textbooks, learning materials
and instructional computer software to public and
nonpublic school students grades K-12.
Although most of the program's funding goes to
public schools, Catholic schools have long
depended on this program and have used the benefit
to continually update math, science, and reading
textbooks, as well as to purchase new
instructional software for technology labs.
Students cannot learn or succeed without effective
and up-to-date learning materials, and this
program has helped ensure those materials are
present in ALL schools.
To find the contact
information for your State Representative and
State Senator, go to www.ilga.gov and click on
Legislator Lookup in the lower, right-hand portion
of the page. You can then look up
your State Representative and State Senator
by district #, your home or school address, or zip
code. You can also call our offices for
assistance at 312-368-1066 or
217-528-9200. Thank you for your
attention and assistance on this important
matter. ACTION
ALERT: WRITE THE GOVERNOR TO URGE TEXTBOOK LOAN
FUNDING! Our first
action alert of the year has arrived! The
Governor is currently working on his budget
recommendation for next fiscal year. Our
challenge is to convince him to include funding
for the Textbook Loan Program in his budget
proposal. Accordingly, I am asking that you,
your school's staff, your parents and your
parishioners all take time to write the Governor
with this important request. A sample
letter is linked below, but if at all possible, I
urge you to personalize your letter. Talking
specifically about what Textbook Loan has provided
your school in the past will be especially
helpful. The Governor will be preparing his
budget for the remainder of the month and perhaps
into March, so there is plenty of time to get the
word out, gather support and flood his office with
letters. Please do whatever you can
to encourage broad participation. A high
level of sustained grassroots engagement is
essential to achieving our goals.

letter. Thank you for
your attention and assistance on this important
matter. Zach
