In the spring I have counted one
hundred and thirty-six different kinds of weather
inside of four and twenty hours. ~ Mark Twain
Congratulations to our Dance Team who
finished in 3rd Place in the Class A "Open Dance"
category and in 4th Place in the Class A "Lyrical"
category at yesterday's TDI State Finals. Besides
bringing home our first-ever state trophy for
Dance, the team scored the highest two scores in
the history of St. Francis
Dance. We are having a
Cereal Drive This Week. Since
food supplies at local pantries are down, Alex
Moresco and the Student Ministry Team are
collecting boxes of cereal for Hesed House
this week. Any boxes you bring will be
matched by a SF family and then again by Costco!
This is an awesome opportunity to feed the hungry
this Lent. Please join us and send a box to
school with your student by Friday. The
homeroom with the largest total on Friday will
receive a
prize.

From the Parents'
Organization
Dear St. Francis
Community, "It is in giving that we
receive" and through the generosity of so many,
the Parents' Organization's major fundraiser,
"Taking Chances for St. Francis" was able
to raise $75,000 to put towards the operating
expenses of the school. We are so blessed to
have so many wonderful families in our community.
We are especially blessed by Pat and Rita Lusk,
who unselfishly accepted the responsibility of
"Chair Couple." Without their efforts, this
extraordinary event would not have been possible.
I thank you immensely for giving so much of your
time! I would also like to thank all
of the Committee Chairs, Volunteers, Bob Mamminga
and the fabulous Jazz Band, the entire staff and
faculty of St. Francis, especially, Larry Baker,
Jeff Gerdeman, Paul Johnson, Chris Konchel, John
Donahue-Grossman, Trish Lynch, Debbie Quirk, Jess
Stielow, John Schuller, Kathy Henning and
Shauna Taylor for going above and beyond the call
of duty. I can't forget to thank Paul Linden,
Ellen Polzin and Diane Mercadante for putting up
with the volunteers who sometimes took over their
office - sorry for the disruptions. It is with
grateful thoughts of the many qualities that make
all of you so very special. I thank each and
everyone who participated, in one way or another,
in this wonderful event for giving of your time
and effort to brighten the lives of the St.
Francis Community, for sharing and caring so much
for so many...and for doing all you do with a
smile and unforgettable kindness. You are
appreciated far more than you will ever
know. It is each and every one of you that
continue to help make St. Francis the wonderful
place it is. In these especially
difficult economic times, I thank you again for
making "Taking Chances for St. Francis" a
success. This is the Parents' Organizations
only major fundraiser, so if you were not able to
participate this year, hopefully, you will be able
to join us next year. On another
note, we are entering the last quarter of the
school year, which means that the Parents'
Organization Board is in need of some new members
for next year. If you or someone you know,
might be interested in getting involved, please
contact one of the members of our Nominating
Committee (names and numbers are posted on the
P.O. webpage). Remember, your
only requirement is that you are a parent of a
student at St. Francis ...so no excuses!!! I
am encouraging everyone to get involved with the
P.O. Our next P.O. meeting is Wednesday, March
18th at 7:00 pm in the Faculty
Lounge. Sincerely, Sue
Ferraro, President St. Francis Parents'
Organization

Notes from the Wellness
Center
Seasonal allergies, also known as hay fever
or seasonal allergic rhinitis, affects as
estimated 40% of children in the US and leads to
more than 2 million missed school days annually.
Allergies begin when trees, flowering plants,
grasses and weeds release pollen. Molds
which grow in soil, vegetation and rotting wood
can cause allergic symptoms when they become
airborne.
Symptoms include sneezing, runny nose,
congestion, cough, sinus pressure, watery eyes, as
well as itchy eyes, nose and throat. These are the
primary symptoms. Additionally people with severe
allergies can experience other systemic complaints
such as fatigue, irritability, and inability to
think clearly. For those with asthma these
allergens can trigger typical asthma symptoms such
as shortness of breath, wheezing and
cough.
Is it a cold or is it allergies? Most colds
go away after 7-10 days, while allergy symptoms
can last for weeks or months. If there is low
grade fever and achy feeling it is probably a
cold. Allergies usually produce a thin watery,
clear nasal discharge while a cold produces a
thick yellow nasal discharge. Symptoms range from
minor temporary inconveniences to severe symptoms
which affect day-to-day activities. If your
student has spring allergies it's time to have
those OTC medications ready or prescription
filled. Click here to read about treatment
options. http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/hay-fever/DS00174/DSECTION=treatments-and-drugs |
