Quote for the week:

"The difference between school and life? In school, you're taught a lesson and then given a test. In life, you're given a test that teaches you a lesson."
Tom Bodett

Congratulations to Joan Kustak who is a 2009 Math Teachers' Association of Chicago and Vicinity "Distinguished Life Service Award Recipient".  She will receive the award at the MTA Spring Dinner on Thursday March 26 at the DeLaSalle Institute.

Yesterday, March 4, Catholic schools from around Illinois gathered in Springfield for the Catholics @ the Capitol rally and lobbying day.  St. Francis students joined with students from Montini, Driscoll and Immaculate Conception to participate.

Organized by the Catholic Conference of Illinois (http://www.catholicconferenceofillinois.org), the main policy goal is to persuade the General Assembly to pass SB 183 and HB 643 to expand the Education Expense Tax Credit from $500 to $1000.  You can also help in this important endeavor.

Make a phone call, send an email or mail a letter.  Attached is helpful information about the legislation and here is the link to find your representatives: http://www.elections.il.gov/DistrictLocator/SelectSearchType.aspx?NavLink=1.

Consider the successes of the CCL and Catholics in Illinois concerning private school policy:
  • State recognition
  • Tuition tax credit
  • Textbook loan program
  • Travel reimbursements for families
  • School Safety Block Grant reimbursements
All these policies help to make Catholic education a more affordable choice for the families of Illinois.

Mark Kachmer Receives 2009 National Football Federation Scholarship

Congrats to Mark Kachmer.  On Feb. 28 the Mark was awarded The 2009 National Football Federation Scholarship. Mark received a beautiful Bronze Action Trophy and a 4,000 dollar scholarship to the college of his choice. This award is given annually to 5 seniors in the State of Illinois who excel in Leadership, Academics and Athletic performance.

These awards are presented by the Chicago chapter of the National Football Foundation.  There are 47 such chapters in the US.   The Award ceremony took place at Halas Hall before a packed house of 200 people.  The National Football Federation is a non for profit  group who promotes the carry over values and life  lessons taught by the amateur Sport of Football throughout the U. S.

Late winter\early spring is peak season for meningitis. Is your teen at risk?

Meningococcal disease is a serious bacterial infection that can lead to death within 12-24 hours from the onset of symptoms. The disease can be easily misdiagnosed since early symptoms often mimic those of the flu. Given its quick progression and devastating nature, prevention with vaccine is the best approach to treating meningococcal disease.

Teenagers and college students have an increased rate of meningococcal infection compared to the general population, accounting for nearly 30 percent of all U.S. cases annually.  Research shows teenagers have an unusually high death rate; nearly one in four cases is fatal among this age group.  Of those who survive, up to 20 percent suffer long-term disabilities, including brain damage, loss of hearing, organ failure and limb amputations.

Please talk to your healthcare provider about the meningitis vaccine. For more information, click here.

March is Women's History Month

St Francis is celebrating Women's History Month in March. Women from all walks of life are recognized during this time. In honor of Women's History Month, the Guidance and Counseling Department is sponsoring a Women History Trivia Contest. Students can test their knowledge and possibly win a great price. Please contact Mrs. Rupp for more information.
Attention Sophomore Parents

A reminder that MARCH 15 is the deadline if you wish to ensure a particular enrollment time for your son/daughter in "Intensive English and Math:  Preparing for the College Boards," our summer SAT/ACT course.  On March 15, we establish our class sections and then open the course to outside schools.

Of course, your son/daughter can enroll any time after March 15, but he/she may have a limited choice as to class times/dates.
