Charitable Contributions for Certain IRA Owners
With passage of
the Tax Relief, Unemployment Insurance Reauthorization and Job
Creation Act of 2010 (the Tax Act of 2010), Congress retroactively
reinstated the ability to make direct qualified charitable
distributions from your IRA account, in amounts up to $100,000, by
IRA owners who are at least 70-1/2 years of age. This provision
has been extended until December 31, 2011.
This provision
allows an IRA owner who is at least 70-1/2 years to make a transfer
to a qualified charitable organization (St. Francis High School would
qualify) without having to pay any tax on the amount contributed from
the IRA account. The transferred amounts are counted in
determining whether the owner of the IRA has met the IRA's required
minimum distribution rules. The amount contributed would
generally not qualify for a charitable contribution deduction because
there is no tax paid on the distribution.
This means that
prior to December 31, 2011, anyone who has an IRA account and who is
at least 70-1/2 years of age can make a direct contribution to St.
Francis High School (up to $100,000) and not have to pay any tax on
the amount of money taken out of the IRA account for such
contribution.

New LRC Hours
The Learning
Resource Center expands its hours of operation to 7:00 p.m. every
Wednesday beginning November 30! This will allow students working on
a group project to have a place to meet and allow student-athletes a
place to study before or after practice. This is a pilot program to
help us determine the need for extending our library hours,
particularly during the winter months.
The after school LRC hours will remain at 3:30 p.m. for the remaining
days
of the week.

Notes from the Nurse
Pertussis
(whooping cough) is an endemic (common) disease in the United States,
with periodic epidemics every 3 to 5 years and frequent outbreaks. In
2010, 27,550 cases of pertussis were reported in the US-and many more
cases go unreported. The primary goal of pertussis outbreak control
efforts is to decrease disease and death among infants; a secondary
goal is to decrease disease among persons of all ages.
Following increased disease activity from 2010 and early 2011, there
has been a continued increase in reported cases of pertussis
(whooping cough) throughout the summer and fall in DuPage County,
with the majority occurring in children and adolescents. Although no
localized outbreak activity has been reported yet this year, in
several recent cases, there have been two or more cases within a
household. Outbreaks at middle and high schools can occur as
protection from childhood vaccines fades.
Pertussis
outbreaks can be difficult to identify and manage. Other respiratory
pathogens (bacterial and viral) often cause clinical symptoms similar
to pertussis. Diagnosis of pertussis is based primarily on clinical
presentation (cough lasting at least 2 weeks with inspiratory
"whoop," and severe coughing attacks, without other apparent
cause). Vaccination is the most important preventive strategy against
pertussis. New booster Tdap vaccines became available in 2005 that
offer continued protection against pertussis, diphtheria and tetanus
for adolescents and adults.
NEW MANDATE for
2012-2013 SCHOOL YEAR: Students entering grades seven through 12 who
have not already received Tdap are required to receive 1 Tdap dose
regardless of the interval since the last DTaP, DT or Td dose.
