Congratulations to Coach Scott Nelson and our
Cross Country teams! This past weekend, led by
conference individual champion Courtney Trunk, our
Girls Varsity team won the Suburban Catholic
Conference Championship. With another strong
conference showing, our Boys Varsity team finished
in second place. Both teams are now off to the
IHSA Regional Race at Oakhurst Forest Preserve
(directions available on our school's website)
this Saturday. Good luck to both teams!
On October 9, twenty-five St. Francis
music students auditioned for the Illinois Music
Educator's Association District 9 honor ensembles
(Band, Choir, Orchestra, and Jazz Band).
These students prepared for weeks and auditioned
with thousands of other music students from
District 9. Four St. Francis students were
selected to participate in these prestigious
groups. Martha McDonnell ('10) was selected
for the All-District Orchestra, Lynn Dreisilker
('09) was selected for All-District Band, Collin
Moat ('09) was selected for the All-District
Choir, and Matt Novak ('09) was selected for the
All-District Jazz Band. These students will
participate in a District Festival in November and
perform a concert with their honor ensembles.
Congratulations to all!
Be sure to check out our new life-size
banners located on the light poles as you drive
into the school parking lot. They reflect the
values and aspirations we work to instill in our
students.

| Notes from the The Wellness Center
Donna Hoscheit,
RN It's
coming- the flu season and will be here before we
know it. This year, the CDC and federal officials
are urging flu vaccination for all children 6
months of age and older. Offering vaccines to
millions more children will hopefully make this
season less brutal than the last. When more
children, teens and adults are immunized the fewer
people we have who might spread the virus to those
most at risk for serious complications, such as
babies, toddlers and the elderly.
The flu is a contagious
respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses.
It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times
can lead to death. The best way to prevent the flu
is by getting a flu vaccination each year. Every
year in the United States, on average: 5-10% of
the population gets the flu, more than 200,000 are
hospitalized and about 36,000 people die from the
flu.
Symptoms of the flu are; fever
(usually high), headache, runny or stuffy nose,
fatigue, sore throat, dry cough, muscle aches.
Stomach symptoms such as nausea, vomiting and
diarrhea also can occur, but are more common in
children. Flu viruses spread mainly from person
to person through coughing or sneezing. People may
become infected by touching something with the flu
virus on it and then touch their mouth or
nose. Generally healthy adults may be able
to infect others one day before symptoms develop
and up to 5 days after becoming sick.
The best way to prevent the flu
is to get a flu vaccine every year. This vaccine
is an inactivated vaccine (containing the killed
virus). It is approved in people ages 6 months and
older. About two weeks after vaccination
antibodies develop that protect against the
influenza virus.
People with a severe egg allergy
and those who have had an allergic reaction to the
flu vaccine in the past should not receive the
vaccine. Those who have moderate to severe illness
with a fever should wait to be vaccinated until
the symptoms lessen.
Please talk to your healthcare
provider about the flu vaccine. Source

eyeglasses or sunglasses around the house? If so,
donate your old eyeglasses and sunglasses to a
good cause. This year St.Francis High School will

deliver them to people in developing countries who
need eyeglasses but cannot afford them.
Also, we are again inviting St.
Francis students to collect old eyeglasses in
their neighborhoods on Halloween while they are
"trick-or-treating". Please talk with your child
about this opportunity to collect more than just
candy this Halloween. Free Trick-or Treat
collection kits and a drop-off box for old glasses
will be available in the Guidance & Counseling
Department. For more info, please contact Mrs.
