Be a Samaritan ~
Samaritan's Feet
Shoe Drive
Jesse Pierce, will coach barefoot at the
Varsity football game at 7:00 pm this Friday, at
St. Francis. By doing so he hopes to raise
awareness of the millions of children throughout
the world who live without shoes. As their
feet blister and skin cracks, they become ravaged
by disease. They are also unable to go to
school because they are without shoes.
We are asking the students and families in
the St. Francis community to donate a
new pair of athletic shoes for
this cause (boys' sizes 3-7 which can be used for
either gender).
The shoe drive begins on Friday, 10/10 and
continues until Friday, 10/17. There
will be a drop box for the shoes at the game
Friday and students can bring shoes to the
cafeteria during all lunch periods.
With our help these children can have a
chance to reach their full potential.

Solar
Panels Produce Enough Energy
to Power the Front
Sign
This past September, Mr. Richter and ten of
his advanced physics students assisted with the
installation of seven solar panels on the roof of
St. Francis. The installation of these
panels presents Mr. Richter with a great
opportunity to teach students about solar energy
and the school's effort to become more "green".
The panels were paid for with the $10,000 BP "A+
for Energy" grant received earlier in the
year. The panels, which were installed by
Pure Energy Alternatives, LLC, are hooked
into the school's power supply, and have
a total capacity of 1120 watts. This amount
of energy, which varies with the time of day and
exposure to sun, is roughly the amount needed to
power the school's electronic marquee sign along
Roosevelt Rd. In their first week of
operation, the panels generated nearly 20 kWh of
energy, and offset about 25 lbs. of carbon dioxide
emissions. Richter comments, "Ultimately
this project will involve the entire St. Francis
student body". |

Time Out For Reading
Reminder
The
next Time Out for Reading takes place on Thursday,
October 23rd. The selection for this month's
discussion is The House of the Scorpion
by Nancy Farmer. The novel is a riveting sci-fi
thriller about a young clone struggling for
acceptance in his tumultuous, yet sheltered
world. Interested students should sign up in
the library. Refreshments will be
served! |
"Jeepers Creepers"- St. Francis is
Collecting Old
Peepers! Do you have any unused
eyeglasses or sunglasses around the house? If so,
donate your old eyeglasses and sunglasses to a
good cause. This year St.Francis High School will
again collect old glasses for "Sight Night".
Volunteers will then repair and classify the
collected eyeglasses by prescription and hand
deliver them to people in developing countries who
need eyeglasses but cannot afford them.
Also, we are again inviting St.
Francis students to collect old eyeglasses in
their neighborhoods on Halloween while they are
"trick-or-treating". Please talk with your child
about this opportunity to collect more than just
candy this Halloween. Free Trick-or Treat
collection kits and a drop-off box for old glasses
will be available in the Guidance & Counseling
Department. For more info, please contact Mrs.
Rupp at extension 104. Please drop off any
eyeglasses by the end of
October. |
