MEDICATION POLICY
MEDICATION POLICY
When a student requires medication, the primary responsibility for administering the medication rests with the parent. St. Francis recognizes that some short and long term medical conditions require medication prescribed at intervals that may include school hours. When your physician has determined that medication is necessary during school hours, the follow procedure must be followed.
No school personnel shall administer to any student, nor shall any student possess or consume any prescription or non-prescription medication unless the completed
Authorization for Administration of Medication Form is on file in the Wellness Office. This form must be signed by the parent and completed by a physician prior to dispensing of any medication to the student.
- All prescription and non-prescription medication require a doctor’s order and parent permission.
- Prescription medication is to be in the original, labeled container as dispensed by the pharmacy or the manufacturer. It must state the student’s name, name of the medication, dosage, directions for use, and date.
- Nonprescription, over-the-counter, medication must be in the original manufacturer labeled container.
- All medications must be delivered to the school nurse (or in case of the nurse’s absence a designated administrator) as soon as the student enters the building and prior to class.
- By law, the only medications student may carry are: asthma rescue inhaler medication, epinephrine auto injector for severe allergy and insulin/diabetic supplies.
- Beginning January of 2011 students may carry pharmacy prescription labeled rescue inhalers with parent signature only on the above form. Please provide the Wellness Office with a copy of the prescription label.
- The school nurse (or in case of the nurse’s absence, a designated administrator) will administer the medication or supervise self-medication in accordance with the physician instructions.
- Medication orders must be renewed annually at the beginning of the school year or when a medication or the dosage has been changed.
- All medications must be picked up in the nurse’s office at the end of the school year.
- Tylenol or its generic, acetaminophen, may be given only if the parent gives permission annually on the Student Health and Emergency Form.
