In keeping with the mission of Jesus Christ and the Church to love and serve one another, St. Francis High School requires our students to participate in a Christian Service Program. By completing 60 service hours prior to graduation, our hope is that students will make service to others, especially those in need, the very foundation of their lives.
We ask our students to use their gifts of time and talent beyond the home and family. Service hours are not meant to replace household chores and family responsibilities. Rather, we ask your sons and daughters to serve in the following ways:
- Freshman 15 hours centered on neighborhood and local community
- Sophomore 15 hours centered on parish or school community
- Junior 15 hours centered on helping those in need in the wider community
- Senior 15 hours centered on helping those in need in the wider community
By April 15 students will submit their Service Project (Time Log and Reflection Paper)to their Religion teacher (juniors/seniors not in second semester Religion will submit their paperwork to their first semester teacher). Service program forms and the Reflection Paper rubric can be found at http://www.sfhsnet.org/top/studentsvcs/cmin-svchours.htm for you to download and print.
- Seniors who have not submitted their Service Project by April 15, 2009 will be required to attend school Thursday, May 14 th, and Friday, May 15 th in order to fulfill this graduation requirement.
- Juniors, Sophomores, and Freshmen who have not submitted their Service Project by April 15, 2009 will have 5 hours of service added and will not be permitted to start school in August until all service requirements are met.
It is the responsibility of the student to find his or her own service by paying attention to the many opportunities offered by the Office of Pastoral Ministry: listen for daily announcements, check the service bulletin board, talk with your religion teacher or check out the website. Service trips are available where students, faculty and parents travel to different locations to serve our local communities and beyond.
We hope this program provides valuable opportunities to our students to help others and make the world a better place. We thank you in advance for your help and cooperation.
Blessings on your school year,
Diane Mercadante Peter Shaughnessy
